Culturally responsive teaching involves “using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them” (Gay, 2010, as cited in Muniz, 2019, p. 9).
One strategy faculty can use to engage in culturally responsive teaching is choice boards. A choice board is a graphic organizer that offers students multiple options to complete learning tasks based on their interests, readiness levels, or learning preferences. Choice boards not only give students options but also empower students to take ownership of their learning.
