R – Respectful of self and others.

  • Treat your students the way you want them to treat you.
  • Practice Empathy – remember that your students’ world is as real as your own.
  • Provide intentional opportunities for students to get to know and learn from each other.

A –  Authentic

  • Don’t try to be someone you are not.
  • Know your strengths and use them to your advantage.
  • Know your weaknesses and seek help or support to address them.
  • Be prepared – be intentional with your lesson design, instruction, facilitation, and directions.

P – Positive and encouraging

  • Get to know your students interests and use them to support your instruction.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and challenge convention.
  • Practice and reinforce the notion of active listening.
  • Celebrate failure and student’s personal growth.

T – Timely

  • Start and end class on time.
  • Provide timely and actionable feedback.
  • Be consistent with timelines and deadlines.
  • Address misbehavior immediately.

O – Open

  • Clearly state your expectations and practice consistency
  • Communicate directly to students that you are there to help them achieve their potential in your course
  • Uphold office hours and Spend time with students outside of class.
  • Talk to your colleagues about your successes and challenges – we are one MC and we are all in this together!

R – Realistic

  • Earn students respect by being prepared, fair, honest, and dedicated to your craft.
  • Know that negative student behavior is a real and common in higher education.
  • Accept that discipline is subjective – be familiar with MC policies and procedures and be consistent with their use.
  • Realize that you are in control and that an immediate response is not always required.
