The ABCs of Motivating Learners: Autonomy (In-person at TPSS)
This session is the first of a four-part ABCs of Motivation series for First Faculty Fridays based on an expanded version of Self-Determination Theory. Each month, we explore one core driver of student motivation—Autonomy, Belonging, Competence, and Meaning. Participants can register for one or any combination of the workshops.
In this first session, we focus on Autonomy—the experience of having choice and control in one’s learning. Research shows that when students feel a sense of ownership over their educational journey, they are more likely to engage, persist, and succeed (Ryan & Deci, 2000; Reeve & Cheon, 2021). We’ll examine the concept of autonomy in college teaching and discuss seven creative strategies for supporting student voice and choice. You’ll leave with fresh insights and practical strategies to experiment with in your own teaching context.
