A Multidisciplinary Toolbox for Motivating Diverse Students

Whether we like it or not, we teachers are in the business of motivating our students. In fact, the motivation level of our students is often what most determines their success in and enjoyment of our classes. Fortunately, motivation is a well-studied topic across a broad variety of disciplines, including psycholinguistics, educational psychology, organization-al psychology, conflict resolution, stress physiology, and marketing. Drawing from current literature across these areas, the presenter dis-cusses five important overlaps of these disciplines and, from this set of core principles, identifies key strategies, both quick and involved, for motivating our students in the community college classroom.
