Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building and the campus library renovation in the Resource Center for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:

Project Update Forum

  • Please join us on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, for a virtual Project Update Forum at 6:00 p.m. We will provide an update on the status of the Leggett Math and Science Building and the Library/Resource Center Renovation projects and give an overview of upcoming phases. Please register here.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation   

  • Weekend Work: Gilbane Construction will conduct work on Saturdays for the remainder of the project. This Saturday, April 13, work will begin at 9 a.m. for exterior activities. All work will follow the requirements of the noise ordinance.
  • Exterior Work: The installation of the exterior wall panels is progressing. Steel erection for the canopy at the main entrance is complete. Roof work for the main entrance is continuing, including painting. Steel erection for the canopy at the New York Avenue entrance is progressing.
  • Deliveries: Materials for interior work activities are being delivered to the site. All drivers are continuously reminded to adhere to the construction directives, which prohibit project vehicles from proceeding down New York Avenue past Academic Way. These directives also prohibit any vehicles from accessing Takoma Avenue. Representatives from Gilbane Construction will continue to monitor Takoma Avenue and are committed to taking the appropriate action where violations occur.
  • Trash Trucks: Starting next week, additional trash trucks will be present on site.

Leggett Building—Construction   

  • Interior Work: Interior work is continuing, including the installation of flooring and light fixtures, painting, and cleanup of interior areas.
  • Exterior Work: The main entrance work on Fenton Street, including the canopy lighting, is continuing. Landscape materials, including grass, shrubs, and trees, are being added to the main entrance area. Lighted handrails are being installed on the side of the building interior to campus. Windows continue to be tested for functionality.
  • Steel Work: Steel work related to framing for the walls at Science North will commence next week. This will occur starting at 7 a.m., and there will be an intermittent clanging noise during the duration of this work. This is expected to last about a week.
  • Trucks on Takoma Avenue: A limited number of trucks related to the landscaping work and exterior façade testing will be accessing Takoma Avenue as needed. Vehicles will proceed via New York Avenue and enter the construction site from the new Takoma Avenue parking lot entrance. Upon departure, the trucks will turn east on Takoma Avenue to New York Avenue and turn right on Fenton Street.
  • Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on site for use within the structure. Drivers are routinely reminded they are required to follow the designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.
