The Struggle For Justice

Five students from my ELAI 990 course visited the National Portrait Gallery over the weekend to discover the wealth of art that could inspire them and be relevant for their capstone project. I was eager for the students to see the exhibit, The Struggle for Justice, where they could see some examples of figures who have played important roles for the fight for social justice. Another exhibit we visited together was the Hung Liu temporary installation. We discussed the artists’ feminism and activism, and her efforts to make the invisible larger than life and visible to all to see. After spending a little bit of time together as a whole group, the students decided to break off into pairs or on their own to experience the museum in their own way. It was a pleasure to meet some of my students in person and to introduce them to one of the many incredible Smithsonian museums!
