Afrikaanse word of the week: Braai – you might compare it to a barbecue but it is the complete opposite and the complete package. When you braai in South Africa, it is a whole social gathering. Someone can invite you for a braai at noon and you would eat at 18:00. It is the grilling of meat on an open fire with charcoal, with the men usually in charge of the meat and the women make the side dishes than go with it. We grill anything from beef and chicken to “braaibroodjies” (another Afrikaanse word)

This week you have the great opportunity to indulge yourself in the work of your fellow students. For the 7th year in a row, the Art W@lk has been presented by the Rockville Art Department. It is an opportunity for students to show their art work and campus, whether it is making an igloo out of balloons, planting cork screws in the ground or making constructions out of rolled up paper.

It is a wonderful way for the students to get creative and think outside the box. Each art work has a story to tell, and on the plaque next to the work is an explanation from the artist him/herself and a title to go with the piece. You can walk through some of the art pieces and even touch others which pull you in even more.

Be sure to check out the Art W@lk this week from the 9th -12th of April 2018. Not all the art work will be in your face, so see it as a fun scavenger hunt and see how many you can find.

Madlene Nel

One part student and one part friend, two parts explorer and four parts drama queen. When you put it all together you’d have a nice apple pie and I just made myself very hungry.

My name is Madlené and I am from South Africa. I have been privileged enough to be able to experience the American culture and get to know a variety of amazing people living here. I enjoy travelling and discovering new places but above all I love meeting new people and learning about their culture while sharing mine as well.

In my free time I enjoy reading a good book or two and of course I am addicted to Netflix (Not my fault . . . it’s those 10 seconds they give you to choose whether you want to go on with the show or stop and I seem to miss clicking the stop button every time). I love writing songs and performing in front of others. Over the weekend I like hanging out with my friends, going to see theatre performances and discovering new places to hike, eat or just to have fun.

I am majoring in Performance Theatre and want to pursue a career in Musical Theatre.

I am excited to share my college experience with you and I hope you enjoy this journey with me.
