Ladies and Gentleman… let us embark on this wonderful quest that is, SWEATER WEATHER!! I apologize for the caps, but can you just imagine all the excitement that I have for my favorite season?!

All capitalization aside, Autumn isn’t just a time for colorful leaves, giant sweaters and hot cocoa. Autumn is also notoriously known for snot bubbles, stomachaches and the FLU. For those of you rare beings who somehow dodge getting the Flu every year, congratulations! For the rest of us, make sure you follow some quick tips to ensure that you stay healthy and Flu Free this season.

Tip #1: Wash Your Hands!

This one seems simple enough, but PLEASE I beg of all of you, to wash your hands. This doesn’t mean using hand sanitizer or splashing your hands with some water. Washing your hands means using hot water and SOAP to ensure that you are getting all bacteria and dirt down the drain. Wash thoroughly for at least 30 seconds to ensure you are not transmitting the ick!

Tip #2: Cough Into Your Elbows!

I can’t say this enough. If you are not used to coughing or sneezing into your elbow please get familiar with it! This is essential when in crowds, classrooms or simply just walking down the hallway. A sneeze can transmit germs up to 200 ft!! So please, do us all a favor and cover your mouth! For those of you already sick or wanting to prevent the flu please go get a Flu Shot!

Tip #3: Eat Healthy!

To stay healthy, you must eat healthy! If you expect to stay in mint condition by only eating Twinkies and drinking Coke, think again. To ensure you don’t get sick make sure you are eating properly and getting all your nutrients! Side note: Students and Faculty, if you have difficulty having consistent and healthy meals please look out for the Mobile Markets or Snack/Lunch on the Go to ensure that you are getting proper meals and nutrients! These are located on all campuses at different times, check the collegewide calendar for times! Please ensure you’re drinking lots of water and eating vegetables, your body will thank you!

Tip #4: Get Plenty of Rest!

Once again to debunk this myth, students you are not invincible! I know as hard as we want to be, proper sleep is needed. That assignment can wait, the TV show will still be there and that job is not worth the late hours. Please get proper sleep! On average if you are sleeping less than 50 hours a week (6-7 hours a day) you will really suffer some consequences! Your immune system will weaken and snapping back from colds will be much harder. Ensure you are getting proper sleep and enough hours weekly!

Make sure you check out the SHaW Center for information all about student health and wellness.

I hope all these tips were helpful and beneficial for you guys! Stay bundled up and safe out there! See you next Monday!

Kayla Savoy

Hey there! I promise finding this author’s note and stumbling across my blog page is no accident. My goal at the end of the day is to hopefully get you laughing, encouraged, or ready to make a change in your life. Now back to basics. My name is Kayla Savoy and this is my second year here at Montgomery College. Although I transfered from a different Community college halfway through my first year, I decided to make the switch and study Interior Design here on the Rockville campus! My goal after graduating is to transfer to Marymount University where I will continue my path to becoming an Interior Designer!

In my spare time you might catch me walking along campus helping other students as part of my job as a Peer Navigator or hiding out in Macklin Tower playing the Sims 4! Although Interior Design is my passion for my ocupation, I have found comfort in designing stickers and writing on my own personal blog ‘Accidentally Fluffy.’

Hobbies aside, I know what it’s like to be a college student and see each phase and go through every struggle. I understand the late nights, the “I haven’t eaten in four days”, I even understand the procrastination and overwhelming desire to give up when classes get hard. I hope you view this blog as a safe haven and a place where you can get a quick laugh and not feel judged. I hope you feel empowered enough at the end of each post to search for the opportunities offered here at MC as well!

  1. I wish everyone coughed/sneezed into their elbow – that would really help lessen the spread of germs. Great tips!

    1. Same here, I’m sure covering our mouths and washing hands more frequently would cut down on the spread of germs and Flu! Thanks for reading!
