We’ve reached the point in the semester where most of us are probably just trying to make sure we stay afloat. The honeymoon is over. The period of time where we feel like we can conquer the world and school/work/life is all a piece of cake has ended. We are now firmly in the “please-just-let-me-get-through-the-semester” period. It usually involves lots of late nights and lots of self-doubt. So, the idea of looking ahead when one is firmly entrenched in the “please God, let me pass this class” phase seems daunting. No one really wants to think about the future when they are just holding on for dear life and trying to make it through the present.

However, that very feeling can be why it is important to begin to consider what the next semester will look like for you. Having a plan for the next semester (and beyond) can help one regain a sense of control over the present. Here is where talking to someone can be a great benefit. Not only are there great advisers available to go through every aspect of planning out your future, but you can also find worksheets and guides that you can use on your own to start the process of figure out your strategy.

You can find information on how to go about exploring your advising options by clicking here. For those who want a bit of cheat sheet about what’s available, I’ve provided that below. Here are some of the ways the Montgomery College makes planning easier:

  • Depending on your program, there are advisers that are specific to your needs as it relates to that program.
  • For those who are not able to meet an adviser in person, there is the option of online advising.
  • If you are planning to transfer schools, there’s a whole page with TONS of information regarding that.
  • You can find planning worksheets here.

With registration now open for the Spring 2019 semester, it is important, now more than ever, to take advantage of these options for helping to plan your future semesters at MC. Knowing what lies ahead of you, helps you to focus and get through some of the tougher times. Having a plan for the future can also keep you motivated to complete your program. It’s harder to just walk away in a weak moment of frustration, when you have your whole future laid out in black and white in front of you. And speaking of being in front of you, a great way to keep focused on your future is to literally have your plan in front of you at all times… keep a copy in your textbook or backpack, put one up on your fridge, screenshot it and keep it on your phone… these can all be options for having your plan in your line of sight at all times so that your vision for your future can be sure to come to pass.

If you haven’t registered yet for Spring 2019… what are you waiting for??

  1. Very sound and helpful advice LaTia. There are many MC resources that a lot of students don’t know exist. The planning sheets are great. I see a general theme among bloggers this week is about planning, organizing and seeing an adviser in order to maintain some control and keep the ball rolling toward a degree.
