https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xOA7dKSThWY Hey! Welcome to my fourth entry at MC Voices, today I will be showing…
Afrikaans phrase of the week: “Jakkals trou met wolf se vrou” – Directly translated to “Jackal weds Wolf’s wife”. It has two meanings. One is weather related, when it is raining and the sun is shining at the same time. The other one can be used to describe an unlikely situation.
Welcome back to MC voices! This week I am excited to share with you an event that has been presented at MC for the past 8 years. Last Thursday, the Rockville campus Student Life Senate did MC’s Got Talent at the Performing Arts Center. It is something they are known for and it is a tradition they enjoy bringing back each year even though it is not required.
Eight years ago in 2010, they started off small in the Theatre Arts Building, giving students the chance to showcase their talents and to just have fun. This is a great event because not only do the students get exposure on stage, but they also get a chance to win a scholarship.
The first, second, and third place winners receive scholarship money raised by the Student Life through ticket sales of the night, raffles and donations from businesses. The MC Foundation matches the total amount of donations received from businesses, and that gives between $4500 – $5000 for the winners. MC’s Got Talent is open to all students on any of the campuses, and your talent can be as unique as you want it to be.
Every year they select either students, professors or someone with an art background to judge the show. This year there were 3 judges: our very own president of the college Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, the Student Life director at Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus Kimberly Herrera, and voice producer and director Michael Brown.
This year there were 12 contestants:
- Elisa Mendez (Singer)
- Natasha Mukuka (Spoken Word Poetry)
- Alexander Guzman (Singer)
- Siboney Alfonsina Godoy (Torres Acro-Mambo)
- Oscar Quispee (Musician)
- Roxanne King (Tap Dancer)

- Nohely Hernandez (Singer)
- Joseph Monasterial (Singer)
- Natalia De La Rosa (Dancer)
- John Hamilton (Beatboxer)

And the winners were as follow:
