hocus pocus

Thursday quote: “Double, double toil and trouble. Fire burn, and cauldron bubble” – William Shakespeare –

First it was fall and now we are close to Halloween and before you know it our semester will be over. By now more than half of your week has gone by and you are slowly breathing a little better as the MIDTERMS fade away. YOU MADE IT!

Montgomery College is a community college and they go out of their way to arrange fun events for students, whether it’s watching a film or going on a trip to a museum. And this week I want to invite you to go to the library and firstly check out the fun decorations they put out for Halloween but also to participate in a fun short story contest.

When you walk into the library at the Macklin Tower you will see the reception on your left and when you turn to your right a lovely display of books and décor should draw your attention.

On the table they have examples of short stories but even if you don’t want to participate, you can grab a copy and read it for fun, I mean who doesn’t love a quick horror story.

There are prizes to be won and I don’t know about you, but I can never say no to a Subway gift card.

All right so here are the rules:

  1. Your story should have minimal mechanic/usage or grammar errors.
  2. Have little to no spelling errors.
  3. Use proper syntax.
  4. And most importantly SCARE the readers!

You can submit your entry to: mcrvengl@gmail.com and the deadline is Friday, November 3, 2017.

There are so many fun things to do around campus and I understand that we are all busy and don’t always have the time or energy to do these activities but if you like writing stories and enjoy reading come to the library and let the writing begin.

And if you dare, go watch this clip from the movie Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler. Kathu Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN and don’t forget to dress up!

Madlene Nel

One part student and one part friend, two parts explorer and four parts drama queen. When you put it all together you’d have a nice apple pie and I just made myself very hungry.

My name is Madlené and I am from South Africa. I have been privileged enough to be able to experience the American culture and get to know a variety of amazing people living here. I enjoy travelling and discovering new places but above all I love meeting new people and learning about their culture while sharing mine as well.

In my free time I enjoy reading a good book or two and of course I am addicted to Netflix (Not my fault . . . it’s those 10 seconds they give you to choose whether you want to go on with the show or stop and I seem to miss clicking the stop button every time). I love writing songs and performing in front of others. Over the weekend I like hanging out with my friends, going to see theatre performances and discovering new places to hike, eat or just to have fun.

I am majoring in Performance Theatre and want to pursue a career in Musical Theatre.

I am excited to share my college experience with you and I hope you enjoy this journey with me.

  1. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! I always enjoyed a little fright night, scary movies, etc. It is one time where we can just have fun and literally hide behind a mask! Cool decor in the library. This contest sounds like a lot of fun and is a nice break from the usual daily grind. Timing right after midterms is good too. Best of luck. I hope you win! Let me know if you do!
