Be Prepared Planner

The new semester is off to a great start! The beginning of the semester can sometimes be a bit rocky, so I thought I would give some tips on how to handle it:

  • Check, and double-check your class start day, time and location. If you look carefully at your classes on MyMC, they tell you the official “start date” what time the class is from and even the building and room number. It is super important to check this so you do not get lost, or show up to class a week early (like I almost did because my class was a late start and I did not know).
  • Check Blackboard. A lot of professors will post on blackboard before the “official” start of the semester, so be proactive and keep up to date on all blackboard postings.
  • Forward your MC email. Many professors contact students through email, but if you are not getting your MC emails to your phone, you could miss out on some important things. If you go here, you can forward your student emails to your regular email, so you never miss out on anything pertaining to your classes.
  • Buy your books online. The book lists for classes are posted a few weeks before classes even begin. So make sure you check out your book, find the best prices and purchase them. I recommend ordering them online for MC because the lines inside the book store can be hours long. However, do not open your book until after class starts because some professors say you do not need them and you can return them and get a full refund!
  • Give yourself plenty of time. When starting a new semester schedule, it is important to give yourself extra time to figure out where to go, and how long it will take you. We are a few weeks into the semester and I have finally figured out what time to leave my house to make sure I get to class on time.
  • Be prepared. Make sure you have all the supplies you will need: notebooks, pens, calculator, etc. You always want to make a good first impression and not having a pencil on the first day of classes may not be the best way to go.

I hope these few tips will help you to be better prepared when it comes time for the new semester to begin!

I am a 19-year-old lifelong resident of Damascus, Maryland. I am in my 3rd semester as a part-time student at MC. I plan on getting my Associates Degree in the next couple of years and then transferring to the University of Maryland at the Universities at Shady Grove (health permitting).

MC has been my academic home for the past year and I could not be happier. I started off my collegiate experience at Salisbury University in the fall of 2015, but due to my Chronic Lyme Disease, I was forced to drop out. I thought my academic life was over, as I was too ill to handle a full course-load, but that is when I discovered the part-time option at MC. MC gave the choice to take as many, or as few classes as I wanted, and because of this, I am now back on track to getting my degree. MC also offered me disability support services to further assist me in accomplishing my dreams.

I hope that this blog can help other students like me to see that even though they may not be taking the “traditional” route towards higher education, MC offers load of opportunities that will get us where we want to go. Whether you aren’t sure where you want to end up in life, or have another obstacle, like a chronic illness or disability, you can still reach for the stars and accomplish anything they want to here at MC.
