Sometimes it’s hard to talk about things, especially when they are about “sensitive” subjects or topics that might make the listening party uncomfortable. The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAM). Unfortunately, sexual assault is all too common. If someone you know is currently experiencing something negative, please encourage them to seek out legal assistance. To find out more about SAAM, you can visit this link.

“The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our community, and statistics show one in five women and one in 67 men will be raped at some point in their lives (Smith et al., 2017). Child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before age 18 (Dube et al., 2005).
On campus, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college (Krebs, Lindquist, Warner, Fisher, & Martin, 2007)” (Sexual Assault Awareness Month Proclamation)

The theme this year is “I Ask,” in order to champion the message that asking for consent is a normal, healthy, and essential aspect of everyday activities. To show support, wear a teal colored ribbon on every Tuesday of this month. Find out more about Teal Tuesday’s at Montgomery College here. Montgomery college has awareness tables on all three campuses at the following locations:

GT  =  HT lobby near main entrance and elevator
RV  =  Campus Center near bookstore and Student Life Happenings window
TPSS  =  Atrium of ST bldg
