https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xOA7dKSThWY Hey! Welcome to my fourth entry at MC Voices, today I will be showing…
Thursday Quote: “Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving.” – W.T. Purkiser –
I’m sure a lot of you have been looking forward to this Thanksgiving break; I know I have. Not only do we get a breather from classes and assignments, but we get to spend time with our family and friends. Being from South Africa we do not celebrate Thanksgiving and so I wanted to know a little bit more about it.
Thanksgiving started as a day to give thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year dating back to 1621 where celebrations were held at Plymouth (Massachusetts today). President George Washington proclaimed the first nationwide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, “as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favours of Almighty God.”
Fun facts about Thanksgiving:
- It’s always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
- 46 Million turkeys are being eaten on Thanksgiving in America.
- Campbell’s soup created green bean casserole for an annual cookbook 50 years ago. It now sells $20 million worth of cream of mushroom soup.
- Female turkeys (called hens) do not gobble. Only male turkeys gobble.
- The heaviest turkey on record, according to the Guinness Book of Records, weighs 86 pounds.
- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s first meal in space after walking on the moon was foil packets with roasted turkey.
- Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, not the eagle.
This year I wanted to make a list of things that I am thankful for:
- God has been my rock and my comfort when I needed someone the most.
- Having a house to live in, food to eat, clothes to wear and a bed to sleep in.
- Friends who are there for me no matter how far away we live from each other.
- My talents that God has given me.
- And last but not least I am thankful for being a part of the theater department at Montgomery College. I have finally found a place when I feel welcomed and free to be who I am. Thank you to every professor and every student who greets me with a smile as we pass each other in the hallway, for the laughs in the costume shop and the knowledge you share.
I’d LOVE to hear what your 5 things are that you are grateful for this Thanksgiving so please comment down below and I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a well-deserved break!

Charlie brown … best picture ever. Fun fact about your blog of Thanksgiving…. I had no idea about these fun facts LOL. How silly…. I definitely learned something new. Great blog btw. This may sound repetitive for those who are bloggers that are blogging about Thanksgiving but one thing I am thankful for is meeting wonderful people like you. It’s been an honor working with such an experienced blogger like you Bob. For anyone and everyone who blogs or vlogs each and every one of us are unique in our own ways. Sorry I am reading so many posts at once and realized I accidentally called you Bob. I apologize, but I truly meant what I said above about the person you are. I had read Bobs post before yours and it slipped right through my fingers.
No worries, I knew what you meant.

I love your fun facts about Thanksgiving. We always play some games, sometimes surrounding American history. These would fit nicely in there. It’s just a fun way to get some laughs and learn something new. Sometimes there are little prizes too! A great way to liven it up after consuming too much tryptophan!
That is very true. Every day is abut learning something new. Hope you have a heartwarming Thanksgiving.
Thank you Maddie – I hope you enjoy this “American tradition”. This is perhaps a holiday you are not familiar with. Enjoy!
