https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xOA7dKSThWY Hey! Welcome to my fourth entry at MC Voices, today I will be showing…
For the past 6 years, the Humanities Department has been hosting “Humanities Days.” For a week, they have special events with guest speakers, workshops, films and more. This year, Humanities Days is the week of October 22nd.
On Tuesday October 23rd, Seth Michelson will be presenting his anthology, Dreaming America: Voices of Undocumented Youth in Maximum-Security Detention, at all three MC campuses. This anthology is a collection of prose and poetry by young immigrants who are being held in detention centers in the US.
He will be at the Germantown campus from 12:30 to 1:45 in BE 151, Rockville from 3-4:30 in the Theater Arts Arena and Takoma Park from 6:30-8 in Commons 211.
Professor Michelson has set up poetry workshops in some of the maximum security detention centers, and is now sharing his experiences, as well as the experiences of some of the detainees. He will be speaking about the poets themselves, and reading some of their works. Since these young people are being detained, they are unable to share their works themselves. The poems are written in Spanish and English and will be presented in both languages as well. Through these pieces of literature, we can catch a glimpse of what life is like for these people – our fellow students.
I am planning on going to see Professor Michelson’s presentation so I can better understand the hardships my peers are facing right now and so that I can find out what I can do to help.
MC has many opportunities like this throughout the school year if you want to take advantage of these amazing opportunities to expand your cultural horizons.
This is fascinating Cassidy! Yet another MC event few will know about. Thanks for sharing this information; it would be good for students and staff alike.
What an amazing blog Cassidy, this is something all students should know about so thank you for sharing it with us and I hope to attend one of the sessions.
