Summer Theatre Internship Opportunities!

Afrikaans word of the week: Lekker – It means pleasing, tasty, nice, good, great, delicious. Lekker is used for just about anything you find nice. “How was the party? Lekker,” “I met a lekker chick last night,” “How is that steak? Lekker bro.” Unlike it’s English counterpart “nice”, use of the word “lekker” is actually promoted instead of frowned upon despite being very commonly used. It is speculated that “lekker” will never become clichéd.

Welcome back Raptors! Hope you are enjoying your day off and maybe catch up on some work you might have fallen behind on. Last week we learned about the great opportunities and learning experiences MC has to offer for students. I mentioned that the Theatre Department gave internships to students who want to pursue a career in theatre as a technical performer and today I want to tell you more about it.

The Summer Dinner Theatre is a program the Theatre Department presents each year, not only will you be able, as an actor, to work with professional directors and choreographers but you get the chance to apply for an internship and have a summer job. Yay! This program is focused on musicals and this year we’ll be doing Sister Act and West Side Story.

They offer internships to any of the following positions:

Carpentry and Scenic Construction

Choreography

Costuming

Directing

Lighting

Prop Design and Management

Scenic Arts and Design

Sound

Stage Management

and Technical Direction, Production Management

To be eligible to apply, you need to have at least one year of college and have some experience in the area you apply for. As an intern you will have a mentor who is a professional in their field. You can get between a $1000 and $2200 and you can also earn up to 3 credits for this. If you want a job but don’t have enough experience or don’t want to do any of the internships, Summer Dinner Theatre also offers students employment to work various jobs during the dinner portion of the performances. Jobs include setting up, waiting tables (for those 18 years or older), bussing tables, buffet attendant, clean up, beverage station attendant, usher, etc. You DO need to be 16 years of age or older, have a valid social security number and be able to prove citizenship (I-9).

The DEADLINE is Friday, March 23rd.  DO NOT WAIT until the last day to submit! Be sure to look at the calendar for the schedule so that you will know if you can commit to it or not.
