Current Mood: Unsteady (Fancy Cars Remix) by X Ambassadors
So it is Sexual Assault Awareness month and Montgomery College is having several events throughout the campus to spread awareness.
Last week, I was able to participate in the National Day of Dialogue at the college to answer some questions regarding how the college can make students and faculty aware of sexual violence. In the meeting, we talked about healthy relationships and how consent ties into sexual assault. The conversation lead to ways that men and women can respect one another’s boundaries through phrases and physical touch, and the influence a bystander can have in making sure sexual assault does not happen only on campus but other areas as well.
Song Writing Workshop: April 13. 5-6:30pm Cultural Arts Center (TPSS)
Concert & Conversation: April 13 7-9pm Cultural Arts Center (TPSS)
- TPSS: Tuesday, April 18 @ 11am (ST301)
- Rockville: Thursday, April 20 @ 3:30pm (Faculty Dining Room)
- Germantown: Monday April 24 @ 1:00pm (HT 216)
The college will also be hosting a Slam Poetry/Rap Contest at each of the campuses an hour early before the event. I will also be hosting the contest for the Germantown campus. So hopefully I will see you all there. The more we become aware of sexual assault the more we can help others.
As always, have a great weekend and spread some positivity.

Blu, thanks for highlighting awareness of sexual assault. This is nothing new, and I don’t think women’s lib or anything else has changed the facts over the years. It should be noted that sexual assault is NOT always upon women. In fact, I bet there are a lot more males out there that we acknowledge. I hope you will highlight this fact.
However, as far as females, unfortunately, biology as well as shear greater strength of males places females in a more vulnerable place. Women must realize too that they need to take precautions. No, dressing provocatively is not an excuse for men; however, behaving provocatively and drinking in particular are often the culprits. Drinking often changes people’s inhibitions and dispositions making them behave in ways that they would not sober.
I think it is wise for girls to always be at least in pairs where drinking is involved. Better yet, avoid parties where there will be heavy drinking and crazy behavior. A few simple precautions can go a long way.
Great you are hosting the Slam Poetry/Rap event! Look forward to hearing about it!
