Current Mood: Something Just Like This – The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

 

This week I have the pleasure of attending the Black Brown and College Bound conference in Tampa, Florida. And what an experience it has been. Today is Day 1 of the conference which has been filled with amazing speakers and motivators so far. The overall theme of the conference was to create and inform students and community college staff of ways that they can improve and promote men of color excel in their collegiate academia.

Through these sessions,  I could not help but realize how privileged I am. I am grateful for having a loving mother who displays through her actions and words defining unconditional love. I was raised in a family who placed the highest value on my relationship with God and education. And I have been immersed in an environment and community that strives to make a change in society. Some of these opportunities and relationships are sometimes not expanded to all people of color. And through the conference, I realized that I am privileged. And through my privilege, I feel guilty that I have not used most of the skills, lessons, and opportunities with other people of color. I feel guilty that I have been so infatuated with my own self that I failed to realize my fellow brothers were struggling.  I feel guilty that of the time spent binging on Netflix while people of color are fighting to preserve the rights in this suppressive society.

As I go back to Montgomery College this upcoming week I plan to be more active in my community and share this experience with other people of color. And ensure that not they have a voice but the community is there for them as well.

My name is KeAndre Blue, but Blue is my preferred name. I adore books and I am from Bristol, England. I have been living in the United States for seven years. I have had the blessing to travel a lot during my younger years of childhood which has open my mind to different cultures, environments, and how truly magnificent the world is.
My siblings are my pride and joy. And my pet, Kohta, who's restlessness makes my day. I consider myself a free spirit who thrives on spontaneity and conquers adversity. In my down time I am either reading a book or writing poetry. But when the weekend comes, I am out with friends attending a concert, camping, taking random road trips, or occasionally visiting the museum.
I have a strong relationship with pizza, and will spend more money on food than on clothes without a second thought. I enjoy yoga and running and my music interests are mainly deep house, indie, and jazz. My main goal in life is to gain more than five hours of sleep see if I can survive on pizza alone.
I am currently pursuing my associates degree in Communication Studies and will hopefully graduate in the fall of 2017.
With all of that being said, I hope you guys enjoy my posts. And if you see me on campus say “Hello”, I would love to meet you all.

Blu, I am glad you got to go to the conference and to have that ‘moment’ when we get a reality check and realize we may be taking things for granted – very common in this society, and very much so in this county. People always tell me we live in a bubble here in the DC metro area, and I believe this is true. Many of the struggles are not just minority based, but I would say socio-economically based. Just go to Appalachia in W. VA or any dying US town. The key of course for anyone is education and attitude but opportunity sure makes all the difference. Entitlement is never a good thing. I agree, when you have something good, you need to share with others; otherwise it really does nothing good at all. Your mom and family are to be commended for instilling great values.
