GRIDLOCK Dance: Tooth and Claw
GRIDLOCK Dance: Tooth and Claw
Fifteen performers. Five giant cement blocks. One mega dance.
Featuring virtuosic movement, original lighting, and an ABBA-inspired score, Tooth and Claw is an immersive experience that questions the true cost of the American dream. Choreographed by Madeline Maxine Roman, the piece explores the Maryland expression of the “crab basket effect” and its influence on individuals, relationships, and society.
Featured in Dance Magazine’s 25 to Watch, Roman is the founder and Artistic Director of GRIDLOCK Dance in Washington, DC. Her choreography is “intellectually probing, politically minded, and personally revelatory” (Dance Magazine), “boldly explores technology’s downsides” (Washington City Paper), and provides “a searing comment on how pervasive social media and mobile devices affect human behavior” (Arts ATL).
The short version of Tooth and Claw was supported by the Atlas Arts Lab Fellowship. This new, large-cast version is supported by the Montgomery County Artists & Scholars Project Grant and an Artist Residency with the Cultural Arts Center of Montgomery College.
