The 2015 Maryland Traditions Achievement in Living Traditions and Arts Awards Ceremony and Concert

Please join us on Saturday, December 5th to celebrate the state’s highest award for recognizing traditions, people, and places that are emblematic of Maryland’s rich cultural heritage. This year’s winners are:
Person: Captain Kermit “Robert Lee” Travers (Dorchester County), the only surviving African-American skipjack captain active within the Chesapeake Bay Region.
Place: Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (Baltimore City) is an important hub for the Greek community of the Baltimore region through its religious services, the Greek Independence Day Parade, and its Greek Folk Festival, the largest in Maryland.
Tradition: The Marbles Game of the Greater Cumberland Region (Allegany County) boasts a city tournament dating back nearly a century, and is still taught in regional schools, producing numerous national champions for decades.
And get down with a special treat: a concert by Winfield Parker, who has performed with Little Richard, and on shows with The Temptations, James Brown, Etta James, and Carla Thomas. He is a mentor to generations of R&B, soul and gospel singers and musicians in Maryland and beyond.
