Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Projects Updates – October 20, 2023

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, and the Facilities Master Plan work for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:

Community Meeting Feedback

• As we noted last week, in response to feedback received about the construction pro-jects during the recent Facilities Master Plan meeting, we informed BMC and Gilbane about the noise concerns raised and strongly reiterated the College’s commitment to adhere to the prescribed noise ordinance. As a result, BMC and Gilbane reviewed their operations to ensure compliance. Additionally, we expressed concerns about increased traffic on Takoma Avenue. Both contractors, and particularly BMC, took swift action and issued strong guidance to current subcontractors about traffic routes. BMC has stepped up measures to monitor traffic.

Leggett Building—Construction

• Takoma Avenue Work: Work for the creation of the new parking lot on Takoma Avenue is continuing as discussed both at the recent and previous Project Update Forums. Asphalt paving to connect the parking lot entrance to Takoma Avenue is continuing inside the expanded fence line. At this stage, there is no need for asphalt trucks on Takoma Avenue. The sidewalk on Takoma Avenue near the driveway entrance will be partially closed for the duration of this work.   
  
• Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on-site for use within the structure. All trucks are required to follow designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.

Facilities Master Plan

• Next Steps: With the conclusion of our community meetings, the final draft of Facilities Master Plan will now go to the Board of Trustees for review and approval before submission to the state.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

• Roof Painting: The re-painting of the existing roof of the Library/Resource Center is nearing completion. The paint is applied via spray and no additional noise is expected.
• Main Entrance: Excavation for the new entryway to the Library/Resource Center will resume in the near future.
• Exterior Work: The exterior framework installation for the new façade is progressing.
