Dear Neighbors,
Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this email notification. As previously noted, these update emails are sent on a monthly basis.
This notice provides information on the construction of the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building, and the East Campus Garage repair for Montgomery College.
Upcoming activities and information:
Library/Resource Center—Renovation
- Utilities: In December, final electrical work for the building will be completed. This work will last for approximately one week. A crane will be present on site for two days, and during that time traffic will be reduced to one lane on New York Avenue. Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic direction. A backup generator will be used while the power is off in the building. As a noise reduction measure, the generator will be electric (which is less noisy than gas) and will be located interior to the campus.
- Move-In: Furniture is continuing to be returned to the Library/Resource Center. Final move-in items will be taking place in December.
- Project Completion: The project is expected to be completed in January
Leggett Building
- Final Items: Barton Malow has a limited presence inside the building to complete the final punch list of items. Any construction-related traffic is required to follow the directives regarding parking and traffic flow, including no access from Takoma Avenue. Drivers are routinely reminded they are required to follow the designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.
East Garage
- Project Completion: Work to repair areas of the East Garage located at Fenton and King Streets is nearing completion. Demolition is complete and the final repairs are underway. We expect the project to be complete in November. Until further notice, work will be conducted on Saturdays in addition to weekdays.
- Traffic on New York Avenue: At the College’s request, a Montgomery County Police Officer is located in front of the Nunley Building each day to help manage traffic at the intersection of New York Avenue, Fenton Street, and Chicago Avenue and guide students as to appropriate campus arrival procedures. The College offers a waiting area for pedestrians with benches and access to WiFi and parking spaces for drivers who visit campus to pick up students in the East Garage. Once the East Garage renovations are complete, it is expected that we will see an increase in the usage of these spaces. As we have done in the past, the College will communicate to our students the appropriate arrival procedures, including a reminder about the available spaces in the garage.
