Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building and the campus library renovation in the Resource Center for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:

East Garage

  • Work to repair areas of the East Garage located at Fenton and King Streets is continuing. This work is following all noise ordinances, and no construction vehicles are allowed to access Takoma Avenue.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

  • Fire Alarm Testing: Interior fire alarm testing continues.
  • Weekend Work: Gilbane Construction has now completed its schedule of weekend work. Please be aware that weekend landscaping maintenance may be necessary. We will notify you if any work is scheduled for a Saturday.
  • Exterior Work: The sidewalk replacement and concrete work is complete. Power washing of the exterior of the building is also complete. This concludes the exterior works, with the exception of maintaining vegetation.
  • Deliveries: Materials for interior work activities are being delivered to the site. All drivers are continuously reminded to adhere to the construction directives, which prohibit project vehicles from proceeding down New York Avenue past Academic Way. These directives also prohibit any vehicles from accessing Takoma Avenue. Representatives from Gilbane Construction will continue to monitor Takoma Avenue and are committed to taking the appropriate action where violations occur.
  • Trash Trucks: Additional trash trucks will be present on site for the near future.
  • Concrete Pouring: On Tuesday, June 25, repairs will be made to three areas of the sidewalk. This work will involve saw-cutting and concrete pouring and will begin at 9:00 am. A jackhammer will not be used and all works will be undertaken in accordance with noise ordinances. A truck will be present on site for the duration of the work.

Leggett Building—Construction

  • Interior Work: Interior work is progressing, including painting and cleanup of interior areas.
  • Exterior Work: The last remaining lighted handrails are continuing to be installed on the side of the building interior to campus. Exterior works have now neared completion. Landscape watering will take place as needed.
  • Tree Protection Fencing: With approval from the City of Takoma Park and Montgomery County, the tree protection fencing is now removed. The landscaping at the corner of Takoma Avenue and Fenton Street will be cleaned and restored.
  • Trucks on Takoma Avenue: A limited number of trucks will be accessing Takoma Avenue as needed. Vehicles will proceed via New York Avenue and enter the construction site from the new Takoma Avenue parking lot entrance. Upon departure, the trucks will turn east on Takoma Avenue to New York Avenue and turn right on Fenton Street.
  • Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on site for use within the structure. Drivers are routinely reminded they are required to follow the designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.

General Project Updates

  • Adjustments to Engagement Schedule: As we near completion for both the Leggett Building and the Library/Resource Center, changes will be made to the process for the project hotline and the weekly email updates. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
