Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring CampDear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, and the Facilities Master Plan work for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:
Leggett Building—Construction

  • Upcoming Takoma Ave. and Fenton Street Work: After discussions with the City of Takoma Park, Barton Malow, and the College, the WSSC work previously mentioned has commenced.
    • On Wednesday, June 14, WSSC began preparatory work for water valve removal in the area by performing excavation on Fenton Street, and minor excavation on Takoma Avenue on Thursday, June 15. Both excavations were temporarily covered with steel plates.
    • On Friday, June 16, the water valves were removed in the excavated areas on Takoma Avenue. A temporary loss of water and sewer to some residences and on the campus occurred for 2 to 4 hours on Friday.
    • Next week, work will continue to restore curb and gutter on Takoma Avenue on Monday, June 19, and to restore paving to the disturbed area on Takoma Avenue on June 21.
    • Due to unexpected existing conditions uncovered by WSSC at the start of the Fenton Street work, the excavations there will be extended into the week of June 19. A water shutdown, which will impact only the College, is planned to occur on Friday, June 23. Pavement will be restored on the disturbed area on Fenton Street early in the week of June 26.
    • The work each day is intended to start at around 9 a.m., and flaggers will be in place to direct traffic as work is being completed in the street.
    • We are continuing to work with the City of Takoma Park and WSSC to mitigate the impact to the neighboring homes and College buildings. Following the WSSC work, BMC will complete the work on the Takoma Avenue parking lot exit and entrance later in the summer.
  • Saturday Work: To prepare for the arrival of the planetarium dome crew next week, Barton Malow will conduct work inside the building on Saturday.
  • Masonry: The brick installation for the building is progressing. The mason is preparing to install brick on the Fenton Street façade.
  • Roof Installation: The roof is being installed on the east side of the building on the second floor.
  • Interior Work: Work on the interior of the structure is continuing to advance.
  • Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on-site for use within the structure. All trucks are required to follow designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.

Facilities Master Plan

Community colleges across Maryland are required by law to update their Facilities Master Plan every ten years. Montgomery College will update our plan over the coming months for the years 2023 to 2033. For more information about the process and ways to stay engaged, please visit our website.

Thanks to those of you who attended the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Facilities Master Plan community meeting on Tuesday, June 6. To find out more about the Facilities Master Plan process and ways to stay engaged, please visit our FMP website.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

  • Exterior Demolition: Exterior concrete demolition work is continuing, and saw cutting measures are being utilized to manage the noise. All work will be in compliance with noise ordinances.
  • Tree Removal: Due to the precise location of the structure of the Library/Resource Center entranceway, work will take place to remove a single tree. After conversations with City and County representatives, it was agreed that the tree could not withstand the project activities in its current location. It will be removed and replaced on campus.
  • Interior Work: Additional work on the interior of the building is advancing.
Holiday Schedule
  • The College will be closed on Monday, June 19, in honor of the Juneteenth holiday, but the Leggett Building project site and Resource Center/Library project site will be operating.

Please visit our website for additional information on all three TP/SS construction projects. As always, you may contact us with questions at community@montgomerycollege.edu or call the project hotline at 800-879-9879.

Thank you,
The Montgomery College Team
