Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, and the Facilities Master Plan work for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:

Leggett Building—Construction

  • Fenton Street Entrance: The pouring of concrete is continuing for the drop-off driveway and sidewalks on Fenton Street.
  • Interior Work: Work on the interior of the building continues to advance, including the installation of flooring, lighting, and other built-in lab fixtures like sinks and tabletops. Installation of wiring for classroom technology is occurring.
  • Trucks on Takoma Ave: The landscaping work has been delayed due to inclement weather. Limited numbers of trucks related to landscape work on the south end of the site will be accessing Takoma Avenue via New York Avenue and entering the construction site from the new south parking lot driveway entrance. Once full, the trucks will turn east on Takoma Avenue to New York Avenue and turn right on Fenton Street to leave the area.
  • Landscaping and New York Avenue: Grading and the installation of landscape materials is progressing. Large grass areas have been added to the east end of the site. Additional deliveries of plant materials are being received via New York Avenue and the internal campus roadway next to the Commons Building (Academic Way).
  • Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on-site for use within the structure. Drivers are routinely reminded they are required to follow the designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

  • Water Line and Upcoming WSSC Work: The creation of the new water line is complete. In the near future, WSSC will be present at the project site to test the new water line. A temporary loss of water is expected during that period. The exact date of this work has not yet been identified by WSSC but we will keep you updated as we receive more information. Please be on the lookout for additional communications coming directly from WSSC. WSSC will provide notice a minimum of two days before the work starts with further details. We are continuing to work with the City of Takoma Park and WSSC to mitigate the impact to the neighboring homes and college buildings.
  • Exterior Work: The installation of exterior wall panels and storefront glass is continuing. Lifts are being used to assist with the installation
  • Deliveries: Materials for interior work activities are continuing to be received. All drivers are continuously reminded to adhere to the construction directives, which prohibits project vehicles from proceeding down New York Avenue past Academic Way. These directives also prohibit any vehicles from accessing Takoma Avenue. Representatives from Gilbane Construction are continuously monitoring Takoma Avenue for violations of these issues.

Facilities Master Plan

  • Next Steps: The College’s Board of Trustees is currently scheduled to review the final draft FMP plan during its January 24 meeting. As you may recall, the proposed content of the Facilities Master Plan was presented to the Board of Trustees on November 13.  A link to view the presentation from the November meeting is available on our website. If the plan is approved by the Board, it will then be submitted to the state in February. Please visit the FMP website for additional information. We will continue to update you as this process moves forward.

Please visit our website for additional information on all three TP/SS construction projects. As always, you may contact us with questions at community@montgomerycollege.edu or call the project hotline at 800-879-9879.

Thank you,
