This is to notify the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus and the surrounding residential neighborhood of drilling activities for the next two weeks. Borings are scheduled around the proposed site for the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus starting Monday, August 6, 2018 through Friday, August 17, 2018. The borings are being conducted to collect samples to determine the structural capabilities of soil (SB) to support the new construction and to determine the water infiltration properties and the presence of ground water for environmental site design (SWM) to serve the new construction. The borings for structural analysis will be about 20 feet deep. The borings for water analysis will be about 10 feet deep. The drill rig will be a rubber-tire ATV or truck-mounted drill rig depending on availability. The drill rig will be safely parked overnight until the work is finished.

Noise Control All work will be in conformance with the City of Takoma Park Municipal Code Chapter 14.12 Noise Control.

The City of Takoma Park Municipal Code Chapter 14.12 Noise Control defines daytime as the hours from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays. All drilling will be performed during normal business hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Drilling activities will be continuous, with about an hour break for lunch.

The City of Takoma Park Municipal Code Chapter 14.12 Noise Control defines the maximum allowable noise level during the daytime as 65 dBA. The drill rig has an automatic hammer that makes a loud metallic noise estimated at up to 120 decibels (dBA) immediately adjacent to the rig. The contractor anticipates the reading to be 87 decibels at 10 feet from the rig and 65 decibels at 80 feet from the rig. All borings are greater than 150 feet from the nearby residences and businesses.
