Montgomery College Board Approves Naming of Math and Science Building in Honor of Mr. and Mrs. Isiah Leggett

Naming Comes In Recognition of Longtime Support of MC by County Executive and Wife Catherine

On Monday, March 26, 2018, the Montgomery College Board of Trustees passed a resolution that approved the naming of the upcoming Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building in recognition of County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett and his wife Catherine, longtime supporters of the College and its students. The building will be located on Montgomery College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.

For the past 12 years, Mr. Leggett has served with distinction as a three-term county executive in Montgomery County and the first ever African American to hold that public office. His support of Montgomery College has led to significant gains in student completion, new and renovated buildings, new academic programs, additional student financial aid, and support of Montgomery College employees.

For students, the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Building will be a key component in their paths to completion since every College student in Maryland must take math and science courses to obtain a degree. The Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building will replace the out-of-date classrooms and labs in buildings that are 56 and 38 years old. The plans for this modernization have been in place for almost 15 years. The College anticipates construction of the new math and science building to start in December 2019, and be fully operational in the fall semester of 2022.

Mr. Leggett’s past efforts and support have led to new and renovated science facilities at the Germantown and Rockville campuses, and he championed the modernization and expansion of the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, including the Cultural Arts Center and Health Sciences Center on Georgia Avenue along with the Charlene R. Nunley Student Services Center.

Mrs. Leggett serves as the first chair of the Maryland Commission on Public Art and is senior vice president of human resources at the nonprofit International City/County Management Association.  She is also a former Maryland State Arts Councilor and previous director of the Young Audiences Imagination Stage and the Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Center.

She is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management and the Senior Human Resources Executive Forum. Her professional recognition includes the Human Resources Professional Excellence Award from the Washington Business Journal; and the Human Resources Achievement Award from the Black Human Resources Network.

Together, Mr. and Mrs. Leggett have been consistent donors to the Montgomery College Foundation. They created the Ike and Catherine Leggett Endowed Scholarship. In addition, they have supported the David and Dorothy Mulitz Davidson Endowed Scholarship and the Montgomery Women Student Leadership Award. Their support has helped many students attend Montgomery College who might not have otherwise been able to attend.
