Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Leggett Building construction project at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. We will strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

Upcoming events are listed below:

  • Demolition
Following the collapse of a portion of the roof of Falcon Hall last week, the team is developing a plan to remove the remaining Falcon Hall gym structure. Once addressed, demolition will continue with the remaining portion of Falcon Hall and then the removal of Science South.
  • Utility Work
Next week, layout and excavation for the new incoming water line from Takoma Avenue will continue. This will involve sawcutting of pavement on site. We will also be conducting off-site excavation for the new incoming water line from Takoma Avenue. This work is expected to take an estimated 14 working days. Per the requirements of the construction permit, work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The work will involve sawcutting of paving, removal of paving, insertion of pipe, and excavation of the water line tie-in location. Following inspection from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), the construction team will backfill and pave the areas of the street affected by this work. Any open excavations will be covered at the end of each workday. During this time and in coordination with the city, the construction team will be restricting access to portions of the street in accordance with the approved plans to complete the work safely and efficiently, thru traffic will be restricted, and only residents who live on Takoma Avenue between New York Avenue and Fenton Street will have access to the block. During the work period, these residents will need to enter and exit their driveways from one direction. Residents will be receiving specific guidance from the construction team prior to work beginning. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause as we work to safely complete this utility construction work. We anticipate this will be the only work for the remainder of the construction project that will require work in the streets.
  • Earthwork
The new stabilized construction entrances on Fenton Street have been installed per county requirements. Given the nature of the material used, we are working with the city to close the east side of Fenton Street sidewalk as a safety precaution for pedestrians. The work to place a new concrete pad for the existing emergency generator at Science North continues. General earthwork activities will continue, to include new equipment/material deliveries, as well as the use of dumpsters for material removal.
  • Site Power/Lighting
Work on new temporary site lighting will begin this week. This will lay out the new light poles for perimeter lighting, as well as commencement of running new power.
