Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this email notification. As previously noted, these update emails are sent on a monthly basis. This notice provides information on the construction of the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building, and the East Campus Garage repair for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities and information:

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

  • Books and furniture delivery: Shelves and books will be returned to the library during the week of March 17. Furniture continues to be delivered and installed. Delivery trucks will proceed down New York Avenue, turn around on campus, and return up New York Avenue to Fenton Street.
  • Metal roof coating: In mid-May, the metal portion of the building’s roof will be coated to prevent leaks. This work is expected to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Minimal noise is expected, and any odor will be minimal and local to the site.

Leggett Building

  • Final Items: Barton Malow has a limited presence on campus to complete the final punch list of items. Any construction-related traffic is required to follow the directives regarding parking and traffic flow, including no access from Takoma Avenue. Drivers are routinely reminded they are required to follow the designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit Fenton Street from Philadelphia.
  • Stormwater management: Later this spring, work is expected to be undertaken to improve drainage at the micro bio pond planters located on the outside of the building on the Fenton Street side and interior to the campus. The planters are a part of the stormwater management features installed as a component of the Leggett Building project.
  • Landscape: Additional plantings will be installed at some point during the spring, as weather permits.

East Garage

  • Final Items: The bulk of this project’s work is complete. ADA-compliant ramp installation is complete. Final punch list items will be addressed the week of March 17 during the College’s Spring Break week. Minimal noise is anticipated.
  • Traffic on New York Avenue: The College offers a waiting area for pedestrians with benches and access to WiFi and parking spaces for drivers who visit campus to pick up students in the East Garage. Once the East Garage renovations are complete, it is expected that we will see an increase in the usage of these spaces. As we have done in the past, the College will communicate to our students the appropriate arrival procedures, including a reminder about the available spaces in the garage. Additionally, we are making arrangements so students can use the cutout on New York Avenue for drop-off purposes. We are awaiting signage to help better guide students to that location.
