Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, and the Facilities Master Plan work for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:

Leggett Building—Construction

  • Landscaping and Takoma Avenue: Grading and installation of landscape materials is on-going. Large trees and smaller plants are continuing to be added into the site. Pole light fixtures are beginning to be installed. Asphalt paving to connect the parking lot entrance to Takoma Avenue is complete. On December 4 and 5, weather dependent, work to install landscape materials on the Takoma Avenue side of the Commons building will be performed. Trucks carrying landscaping materials will be accessing Takoma Avenue via New York Avenue to unload soil and plantings from the street on the west side of Takoma Avenue near the new driveway entrance. Once emptied, the trucks will continue west on Takoma Avenue and turn right on Fenton Street. It is expected to disrupt traffic, but traffic control measures will be utilized as necessary.
  • Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered onsite for use within the structure. All trucks are routinely reminded they are required to follow designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia.

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

  • Water Line: The creation of the new water line is expected to be complete next week. This work includes the use of a vacuum truck, and no disruption to neighborhood water service is expected. Some noise is expected for the duration of this work but will be in line with noise ordinances. One lane of New York Avenue will be closed while this work is occurring and flaggers will be in place to help mitigate traffic disruption. The sidewalk will be closed for the duration of this work and flaggers will help assist pedestrians to safely cross the work zone.
  • Main Entrance: Work for the creation of the new entrance is progressing. Excavation, backfilling, and concrete pouring is occurring for the development of the handicap ramp and the addition of columns at the main entrance. This work is expected to be finished next week.
  • Deliveries: New exterior wall panels and storefront glass are being delivered and installed. Trucks will stop on New York Avenue to unload materials, and flaggers will be in use to help direct traffic around the truck. In line with our construction directives that are in place to prohibit project vehicles from proceeding onto Takoma Avenue, the empty trucks will proceed to an internal campus roadway to turn around and return on New York Avenue. Following the delivered, lifts will be present onsite to assist with the installation.
