Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Projects Updates – July 7, 2023

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus construction projects. We strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

This notice provides information on the construction of the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Building the campus library renovation in the Resource Center, and the Facilities Master Plan work for Montgomery College.

Upcoming activities are listed below:
Leggett Building—Construction

• Fenton Street Work: As mentioned in last week’s update, due to delays with WSSC, the work to remove the valve on Fenton Street has been postponed. We will continue to keep you updated on when this work is expected to take place. Following this, additional work on Fenton Street will be undertaken to backfill and restore the pavement. This will mark the final phase of this work, as completed.  
  
• Masonry: Work for the brick installation on the building is continuing. The mason is installing brick on the Fenton Street façade.
• Parking Lot Exit: BMC will be completing the additional work on the Takoma Avenue parking lot exit and entrance later in mid-July within the fence line of the project. Additional work on Takoma Avenue is now likely to begin in September and will necessitate some traffic and work in the roadway. Details about this project were shared in the June Project Update Forum.
• Roof Installation: The roof installation on the east side of the building on the second floor is advancing.
  
• Interior Work: Work on the interior of the structure is progressing.
• Deliveries: As previously updated, materials are being delivered on-site for use within the structure. All trucks are required to follow designated routes to and from the site and must enter and exit on Fenton Street from Philadelphia. 

Library/Resource Center—Renovation

• Exterior Work: Exterior concrete demolition work is continuing and saw cutting measures are being utilized to manage the noise. Masonry repair work will begin along with preparations for the installation of exterior panels. All work will be in compliance with noise ordinances.
• Interior Work: Additional work on the interior of the building continues to advance. 
• Weekend Work: On Saturday, July 8, Gilbane will be conducting work for the Library/Resource Center renovation project from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to make up for lost work time during the holiday.

Facilities Master Plan
Community colleges across Maryland are required by law to update their Facilities Master Plan every ten years. Montgomery College will update our plan over the coming months for the years 2023 to 2033. There have been four specific engagement touchpoints with the Takoma Park/Silver Spring residents as well as an update during the recent Project Update Forum, with further meetings due to be scheduled in the fall. Project Update Forum
On Thursday, June 29, 2023, Montgomery College hosted a quarterly Project Update Forum for Takoma Park/Silver Spring residents. Project teams provided updates on the Leggett Math and Science Building, the Library/Resource Center Renovation and the Facilities Master Plan.
