This Spring 2022, MC’s Universal Design Center (UDC) is thrilled to host its inaugural Inclusion by Design Summit. This half-day virtual conference on April 29, 2022, will offer multiple workshops, speed sessions, and a virtual Happy Hour!

For easy registration, MC employees can select the Workday registration link to MC Learns in Workday to enroll in the sessions. If you are participating from an external institution or are a student, please use the guest registration link. Find registration links under the schedule of events.

2–3 p.m.: Workshops

The Basics of Universal Design and their Impact on our World

Description

During this session, participants will learn about the Universal Design approach and how its principles and themes apply to other areas beyond physical spaces to technology, instruction, education environments, and services. The themes explored in the session will include (1) how UD benefits all users and not just persons with disabilities, (2) how all people with various levels of ability can independently access environments, and (3) how UD promotes accessibility and usability.

Outcomes

Evaluate the impact of UD on the world around us.
Identify ways in which UD has made our lives easier.
Describe discrete ways in which UD principles can be used to support our professional contexts.

Universal Design for Learning: Setting Your Students Up for Success

Description

In this session, attendees will be introduced to the basic principles of UDL. We will look at case studies in order to consider how UDL principles could be applied in order to meet the needs of the greatest number of students. Attendees will be presented with some actionable take – and will consider how their students could be positively impacted by small changes.

Outcomes

Participants will have a foundational understanding of UDL.
Participants will leave with a framework for applying the UDL principles to increase engagement in their courses.

Technology + Accessibility = Promoting Access for All

Description

Find out how to begin to unpack the question, “is my tech accessible?” Technology is just one component of designing inclusive experiences in a digital world. Let’s discuss the next steps you can take, the impact of inclusive design, and what role technology plays in creating inclusive experiences.

Outcomes

Identify next steps to apply to enhance digital content
Discuss facts and fiction of accessible tech
Discuss strategies for tackling the question, “is it accessible”?

Operationalizing Universal Design with a Plus 1 Approach

Description

UDL empowers educators and students by maximizing accessibility for the widest possible audience. In this speed session, we will spend our time brainstorming just “one more thing” you could add to assist your students in learning as it relates to reducing barriers to accessibility.

Outcomes

Identify 1-3 “pain points” your students experience.
Brainstorm ideas and solutions to eliminate those pain points.
Hear strategies and examples of how to operationalize UDL practices using the Plus 1 approach.

Microsoft 365: Accessibility Tips and Tricks

Description

Microsoft Office has created digital accessibility tools that make creating accessibility documents easier than ever. Office 365 offers a lightweight, portable way to make professional and accessible documents on the go. Come explore Office 365’s capabilities and bring a laptop so we can leverage accessibility tools for your own documents.

Compliance: Exploring ADA and its Implications

Building Self-Awareness: UDL Checklist for Instructors

Description

During this speed session, participants will access a UDL self-evaluation to learn more about their pedagogical practices concerning UDL and gain insight into how they can further their use of UDL practices.

Outcomes
  • Evaluate current UDL practices.
  • Identify areas for UDL improvement.
  • Set a Plus 1 goal for increasing UDL within professional practice.
