Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for your interest in the Leggett Building construction project at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. We will strive to keep our neighbors informed about significant construction events with this weekly email notification.

Upcoming events are listed below:

  • Demolition
This past week demolition continued to remove the remainder of the Falcon Hall structure. Following the collapse of a portion of the roof of Falcon Hall on February 24, the team reviewed the incident and formalized plans to move forward with demolition. In accordance with construction best practices, workers are stationed with 2-inch water hoses within safe distance of equipment to dampen the area and mitigate construction dust. Depending on how much equipment is being operated, one to three workers are assigned to this task at any given time. Science South demolition is underway, or will begin early next week. They will start by demolishing the raised loading dock next to the planetarium and will then begin to demolish the planetarium structure and adjacent portion of Science South. As with the Falcon Hall demolition, workers will be stationed with water hoses to provide misting to mitigate dust.
  • Utility Work
The Takoma Avenue work for the new incoming water line began with a small excavation to determine the existing conditions and determine the size of required connections. The date for water line installation is dependent on receipt of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) specified valves, which can be a 1-2 week lead time. Per the requirements of the construction permit, work will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. To complete the work safely and efficiently, thru traffic will be restricted, and only residents that live on Takoma Avenue between New York Avenue and Fenton Street will have access to the block. During the work period, these residents will need to enter and exit their driveways from one direction. Flag persons will be in place to guide traffic. Once this work begins, it is anticipated to be completed within 14 work days.
  • Earthwork
Due to the new stabilized construction entrances on Fenton Street, sidewalk closure in this area is being coordinated with the City of Takoma Park and expected to be implemented soon.  General earthwork activities will continue to include new equipment/material deliveries, as well as the use of dumpsters for material removal.
  • Site Layout
Layout of locations for temporary perimeter site lighting within the construction fence is underway, along with the associated new power feeds. There will be no temporary lighting in the park-like area at the corner of Takoma Avenue and Fenton Street. Work will also begin to lay out and install the power for the emergency generator relocation at Science North.
