Teaching That Transforms

The Eric Grosse Memorial Fellowship for Part-Time Faculty

“This fellowship didn’t just improve my teaching—it reignited my passion for it.”

Andrew Inches, Part-Time Instructor

A Legacy of Learning, A Future of Impact

The Eric Grosse Memorial Fellowship is more than just a summer course—it’s a transformational experience for part-time faculty at Montgomery College. Rooted in the legacy of Dr. Eric Grosse, a lifelong champion of teaching excellence, the fellowship equips educators with the tools, confidence, and community to deeply engage students and enhance learning outcomes.

Offered by the Part-Time Faculty Institute in partnership with ELITE, this fellowship focuses on the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education and how to bring them to life in today’s classroom—online, hybrid, or in person.

What’s It All About?

Over the course of eight weeks, fellows engage in a dynamic blend of reflection, collaboration, and action. Each week focuses on one principle and follows an easy-to-follow cycle:

1. Bring It Back – Reflect on what you already do
2. Bring It On – Learn new strategies and insights
3. Work It Out – Connect with colleagues through discussion
4. Get It Done – Apply the principle in your teaching
5. Bring It Up Next – Reflect, document, and grow

You’ll leave the fellowship with concrete tools, revised lessons, and fresh strategies that you can immediately use in your classroom.

What You’ll Gain

By the end of the program, you’ll:

  • Integrate evidence-based teaching principles into your courses
  • Create high-impact activities that engage and challenge students
  • Develop a communication and feedback plan that boosts learning
  • Strengthen your inclusive teaching practice
  • Build a professional teaching portfolio with ready-to-use materials
  • Join a vibrant learning community of peers who are just as passionate as you are

The Seven Principles You’ll Master

Each week, you’ll explore a new principle from Chickering & Gamson’s research:

  1. Encourage Faculty-Student Contact
  2. Develop Reciprocity and Cooperation Among Students
  3. Use Active Learning Techniques
  4. Give Prompt Feedback
  5. Emphasize Time on Task
  6. Communicate High Expectations
  7. Respect Diverse Talents and Ways of Learning

The Capstone Experience

At the end of the fellowship, each participant delivers a 20-minute presentation showcasing how one teaching activity embodies all seven principles. You’ll reflect on your own growth, share what worked, and inspire others.

“The final presentation helped me see my own teaching evolution. I felt proud, empowered, and ready to lead in the classroom.”
Colleen King, Part-Time Instructor (Cohort 1 Participant, Mentor Cohort 2)
