Suggestions When Requesting a Recommendation Letter
-
Consider asking a professor, counselor, mentor, or employer who can speak to your character, work ethic, or other qualities to write the letter for you.
-
To be sure you get a strong letter, ask the person if they would be willing to write you a strong letter of recommendation. If they decline (maybe they don’t feel they know you well enough), then consider asking another person!
-
Whenever you ask for a recommendation, be sure to include a copy of your resume, a reminder of how you know the person and for how long and any positive interactions you have had or accomplishments you’d like them to focus on.
-
Give your reference specific instructions for submitting the letter: The due date of May 1 or earlier and the email address where the letter should be sent (smlp@montgomerycollege.edu).
-
Give your reference at least 2 weeks to write the letter if at all possible. If you haven’t heard back in 1 week, feel free to ask someone else or to reach out again in case your first request was missed. Or do both!
