During his visit to our SLMP class at the Germantown Campus on November 10, Maryland State Senator Brian Feldman kindly spoke to us about his role in the Senate and provided valuable advice regarding entrepreneurship and leadership.
Senator Feldman, who represents the 15th legislative district of the Maryland State Senate, chairs an important committee in the Senate, which reviews bills and oversees education, energy, and environmental legislation. Before his election to the Senate, Mr. Feldman had extensive experience as an attorney, CPA, and faculty member at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland College Park. While visiting with us, he also shared that his son and nephew are successful entrepreneurs, highlighting their expertise in their fields as well.
Speaking to us as future leaders and entrepreneurs, Senator Feldman informed us about the numerous opportunities available for businesses in the State Department of Commerce. Senator Feldman emphasized the importance of communication skills for entrepreneurs, as the ability to effectively sell oneself to others is crucial in building a strong network. He stressed the distinction between hearing and listening, understanding the significance of active listening in providing appropriate responses. Additionally, he encouraged us to prioritize our own well-being by learning how to say no and not becoming people pleasers.
Understanding our target market is just as important as building our network, as it influences the individuals who can potentially invest in or support our ideas and proposals. Senator Feldman concluded his informative speech by sharing his strategies for persuading and collaborating with others in the Senate to secure favorable votes and other important influencers. He highlighted the power of simple skills, such as treating everyone with respect, as they can open doors of trust and loyalty in both personal and professional settings.
