Montgomery College student Michelle Menendez has been appointed by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to serve on the College’s Board of Trustees. Menendez will serve a one-year term as the student trustee.
Menendez is a general studies major in her second year at Montgomery College and is a member of the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program, a scholarship initiative targeted to students who have an interest in entrepreneurship. She is also a member of the Montgomery Scholars Honors Program and participated in its study travel experience this summer in North Carolina. In addition, Menendez completed a financial management internship with the Australian Institute of International Affairs over the summer.
Menendez says she has always been passionate about giving back to the community and wants to use her service as a student trustee to give voice to the student experience.
Members of the Board of Trustees exercise general oversight for the College and are empowered to establish policies for implementing the College’s mission. The board’s other responsibilities include setting the salaries and tenure requirements for the College president, faculty, and other employees of the College, as well as establishing entrance requirements, course offerings and tuition rates.
Members typically serve six-year terms, with the exception of the student member’s one-year term. The student trustee is a full voting member of the board.
