My name is Paola Leon, and I’m a proud Latina from Colombia. I came to the U.S. in 2021 as an Au Pair, a decision that completely changed my life and opened the door to my studies at Montgomery College. Back home, I studied Finance and International Business. Now, I’m majoring in Business and plan to earn a certificate in Business Analytics. One of my short-term goals is to gain professional experience here in the U.S.
I was raised by two parents with traditional Latin values, which gave me an “old-soul” perspective, but I’m also someone who loves to challenge herself and try new things outside of her comfort zone.
My experience in this country has brought so much to my life. I still live with my host family, who have become like a second home to me. Their support and the joy I get from their children fill my life with happiness. My sister moved here a year ago as an Au Pair, and having her nearby feels like home. I love exploring nature, so far, I’ve visited more than five National Parks, and my next stop will be Yosemite. These experiences help me stay balanced and ease the feeling of being far from home.
As an immigrant, I know what it means to start over, to adjust, and to dream big. That’s why I try to inspire others. Montgomery College has been a huge part of my growth; every time I’ve needed guidance, someone has been there to help. I hope to encourage other students to dream big, take chances, and truly enjoy this part of their journey.
“You don’t get what you don’t ask for.” That’s a phrase I keep close to my heart; it reminds me to take chances and speak up for the things I want.
