https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xOA7dKSThWY Hey! Welcome to my fourth entry at MC Voices, today I will be showing…
Hola!
This weekend’s weather was just beautiful. I got to be outside a lot since I have a backyard now, and I’m so grateful for that. There are many things that we are now improving at our home and it isn’t easy at all, but needless to say, there’s always room for improvement. Just like a house can be improved, there is always room for improvement at our college as well. Over the years, I’ve come across a few things that I think our college could improve on or even change.
- Bigger desks: There are many classrooms around the Takoma Park campus that still have very small desks which makes it very uncomfortable to sit and write on. I think that making the tables of the individual desks a bit bigger would help students a lot. We don’t like to be distracted during the lecture, yet this makes our note-taking and listening very difficult. Plus, our classes aren’t always full so making the desks bigger wouldn’t affect the space much.
- Lower prices: The prices of certain items are too high, especially for students who eat their lunch and/or breakfast at school. Food should be very affordable in order for students to be properly fueled throughout the day.
- Eating in class: I understand that for safety reasons we’re not allowed to eat inside a laboratory room, but when lecture takes place outside of a lab room, we should at least be allowed to munch on some snacks. Although it may be loud or distracting, it can also help us stay focused and awake, especially at 3:00 PM lectures! We all can be considerate of each other and since we’re adults we should definitely try to make this happen.
- Microwaves: A lot of us bring our lunch and waiting to use that one microwave in the cafeteria is just not right. The Rockville campus has multiple microwaves and even though the Takoma Park campus is much older, we are as important. We are part of the school and should be treated equally. Since some of us can’t attend Rockville due to distance or class availability, it seems only fair to treat both campuses equally.
Well, as you can see, these are a few things I believe our school can improve on; I’m sure they will with time. I’d be happy to know if you have any other suggestions that I didn’t mention here:)
Until next time,
Meredith
Thanks for sharing your insights. I’l stop at the bottom and work my way up, because I think that acquiring another two microwaves is an easy fix. I agree, one is not enough when there are many students all having a limited time between classes to eat. I am sure they would love to provide larger desks, but they do not come cheap, and it would be an outrageous amount to replace all these desks. However, it is good to bring it up because they will need replacement at some point; I think they were trying to maximize space. Maybe the class has 30 kids this semester and 50 next?? I imagine some of these food services are outsourced and that may be why the prices are high (and volume low in comparison to a restaurant). I know this will sound weird, but it may be a good deterrent for not eating junk foods often (and spending too much). I think of cafeteria food as a last resort; tossing a sandwich in your backpack with a piece of fruit and bottle of water is probably the way to go…..which leads me to the last one: Munching in class. Personally, I dislike munching even in theaters and I cannot imagine a professor trying to instruct with packages tearing, food getting dropped, etc. I think one of the main issues with food in the classroom is cleanliness (like no gum in class when a kid because books and desks get ruined).
Well, I am happy to hear that Jane! And yes some things do take time or may not totally work out for our school. I hope the individual desks can get changed in the future though, I understand the budget is something to be considered, but anything is possible with time and patience. As to snacks, I guess I understand yet I still think itwould benefit us more than affect us haha. Everyone has their own opinion! 🙂
