MC Germantown Community Day!

This past Saturday, as the weather gods decided to give us some of the most beautiful weather we’ve seen so far this year, the Germantown Campus of Montgomery College celebrated its 40th anniversary with a Community Day event. It was a great way to spend a glorious, spring Saturday. The event included lots of representation from local organizations and business, and a whole host of activities for the whole family. My family’s favorite part was the petting zoo! My 4-year-old, whose current obsession is all things animals, but ESPECIALLY horses, absolutely loved seeing and touching so many animals (including a PONY!) up close.

In addition to the petting zoo, there were moon bounces, face painting, a photo booth and so much more. A really cool feature of the event was the various information sessions on enrolling at MC, accessing financial aid, and transfer information. It wasn’t all business at the event, as there were stage performances throughout the day that included singing, dancing, and story telling for all ages.

We saw so many families who were taking full advantage of the gorgeous weather and simply enjoying the chance to connect with each other and learn more about various county resources. And for those rumbly tummies from all of the activity, there were several food trucks serving everything from chicken to smoothies to desserts.

For gathering information on the represented organizations, the event gave out “goodie bags” that included some freebies and some information. Additionally, many of the participating organizations and businesses were giving out trinkets, as well. We got a cool card game, a note pad, an awesome (and probably much needed!) hot pack/cold pack, a cool looking rocket pen, some yummy cookies, hand sanitizer, a flashlight/magnifying glass keychain, and a safety light (for running/biking). THAT just includes the tables that we were able to get to. There was so much to do and see that we ran out of time before we could see it all!

It was very cool visiting this event knowing that I, as an MC student, am contributing to the amazing legacy of the school. Seeing such an integral part of the community give back in such a huge way was awesome to be a part of. I wish each campus would do something similar to give us all a chance to celebrate MC in grand style in a manner that each campus deserves. Whether this was something that was just for a milestone celebration (40 years!), or if it becomes an annual event, it was amazing, and it was a great way to spend a Saturday!
