We have all heard about having a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset. Operating with a fixed mindset means you believe there’s no area for growth. You are who you are, and that can not change. However, having a growth mindset means you believe you can do and get better at anything over time with small consistent changes, and hard work.

I guess you would say I had a fixed mindset when I started Montgomery college. I planned to enroll to get additional coach training. I had no intentions of participating in any clubs, programs, or extra-curricular activities. Honestly, I didn’t feel like I could have the full college experience as a continuing education student for many reasons.  One day while browsing through the college website I saw a flyer for MC leads that said apply now. I looked at the flyer and said, nope I’m not applying. I came back three days in a row to look at the flyer before deciding to say yes to what would be one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

A few weeks later I interviewed and was accepted into the program. I can’t find the words to describe how nervous I was on the first day of meeting my cohort. My mind was racing and all I could think was I’m so much older than everyone. As I smiled, I was screaming what I am doing here in my head. After a few ice breakers I realized that despite age I had a lot in common with the people around me. The biggest thing that we had in common was that we were all here to cultivate healthy relationships and obtain skills that would make us strong effective leaders.

Little did I know I would obtain so much more than leadership skills. I’ve gained multiple mentors, lifetime friendships, a greater sense of self, and skills that I use in all areas of my life. Participating in MC Leads strengthened my confidence and gave me the courage to walk through every door that led to infinite opportunities. After reading this blog I want you to walk away with two things. The first thing is MC Leads is an amazing program that you should be a part of your journey at Montgomery College. The second thing is a life lesson, don’t allow fear or negative thoughts to stop you from taking advantage of an opportunity that can positively impact your life forever. I hope this helps you turn 2022 into a year of yes!
