“Wow! An overachiever aren’t you!” is the comment that has stuck with me the most when I’ve told people I’m getting 2 associate degrees from MC before transferring. It wasn’t in my plans to do this. None of my current majors were what I thought I would be doing at the end of my high school year.
I changed my major 3 times before settling with the one I wanted to truly wanted to do, and I’ll be grateful MC made the processes so simple every time. From Business to the medical field and then Journalism and photography it’s been a long road.
Because of the opportunities I got at MC and the things I was able to explore, I discovered I had a passion for both photography and writing. After switching from General studies to history, art, communications, and language a year later I added photography to the mix. It was going to take me a year longer but for me, it was an investment of time to graduate with 2 associates.
Now the million-dollar question, “Was it hard?” in short the answer is yes. It was a lot of planning, a lot of time management, and talking to counselors to make sure I was meeting the requirements to graduate with both associates. But luckily MC staff were always more than happy to help.
The workload wasn’t too crazy since I would just take 4-5 classes a semester and sometimes 1-3 courses in the summer and winter semesters combined. With both subjects, they both required a lot of creativity from me which sometimes it did get tiring and was something that I would experience burnout in. Some classes required more of my time in investment whereas some of my other classes might have taken a dip in. It’s all a matter of balance and using your time wisely to complete your courses to the best of your ability. I know double majoring isn’t something everyone would want to do since it is an investment of time and energy but I do recommend it. I believe it will give me an advantage in my career which is the combination of the two Associates degree from Montgomery College.
