Don’t Hate, Evaluate!

IT’S EVALUATION SEASON!

 

Hey MC, if you’re like me, then you’re receiving those pesky little emails and notifications to complete your course evaluations. Around this time last year, I received these emails and completely ignored them, and this is exactly why I am here now spreading the gospel on how important these evaluations actually are.

As students, this is our way to give our feedback on the courses we take and the professors who teach them. What’s even better is that the course evaluations are completely anonymous. This should be taken advantage of!

As a current student, I know there are professors who could use a tweak or two in their teaching methods, classroom decorum, and overall structure. There’s nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism, and this is your platform to do it! At the same token, you can use this same platform to praise the professors who really work hard to make the learning environment enjoyable for all students. So go on! Give them a shout out!

Course evaluations are also a great way to improve the course for students to come. What you say in those evaluations gives the administration a honest view on what improvements can and need to be made.

All and all folks, your payment of tuition certifies your birthright to enjoy your college experience. Let’s get out, what we’re putting in! How do we do that? By making our voices heard and our concerns and accolades recognized.

I am currently 21 years old and a born and raised (and proud) Washingtonian. My parents both came to the United States as foreigners from Panamá City, Panamá so I ethnically (and also proudly) identify as Latin-Caribbean. I am in my second semester at Montgomery College at the Takoma Park Silver Spring campus. I plan to obtain my associates in Business Administration and go on to complete my bachelors at Howard University with a double major in Business Marketing and Computer Information Systems. In addition to being a super involved student of Montgomery College, I am also a supermom to the most amazing 3 year old girl on the planet. My ultimate goal in life is to become an internationally renowned event planning mogul.

I originally began writing at the tender age of eight. Back when I thought I was destined to be the next Beyoncé, I would write songs with friends and rehearse and perform them in elementary school. Around middle school, I matured and my writing did as well. I took on poetry as a hobby and later it would bring me Literary Love Poetry Awards that I still have medals for to this day. As I excelled into high school, I didn’t realize how much the assigned papers and controversial group discussions would shape me as the “realist” writer that I am today. I know Montgomery College has the power to take my writing skills to the next level, starting with this blog.

  1. I think often people are afraid evaluations and surveys are not going to be confidential although they state they are. And they are. Perhaps some students are afraid of retaliation, but honestly, I think most just need a push to spend a few minutes of their time to do so. I agree that excellent professors should also receive a shout out because if enough students point out a particular professor, maybe they can receive some special recognition.

  2. I really like what you said about using course evaluations to help your professors improve for the students in the years to come. My cousin is taking MC courses and is having a great time with his schoolwork, but I wonder if he fills out these sorts of questionnaires. Thank you for the information about how these evaluations give the administration an honest view on what improvements can and need to be made in how they lay out the courses.
