In our society, unfortunately, emergency situations at schools seem to be happening more and more frequently. If you are like me, you have probably wondered what we are supposed to do in these instances.

Well, if you have been paying attention, you may have noticed some of these “What do I do during a lockdown?” signs around campus. If you’ve been staring down at your phone like I have, or maybe just aren’t the most observant, have no fear. I will walk you through the lockdown procedures now:

During a lockdown:

  • Hide in the nearest room
  • Lock or barricade the door
  • Close windows
  • Turn off lights
  • Remain quiet
  • Do not leave until instructed to do so by law enforcement or public safety

Similarly, don’t forget that all campuses are equipped with the “Emergency” stations throughout. If you ever feel threatened on campus, find an emergency station, press the red button, and help will be there.

Being prepared for an emergency is your best defense. Familiarize yourself with all emergency stations, exits for each of your classes, and know the best places to hide. You can ask your teacher what their plan is if there happens to be an emergency, as well.

Also, make sure to sign up for MC Alerts. This way you can stay up to date on any closures, emergency events, and other MC information.

I hope we never have to use the lockdown procedures, but if we do, at least now we will be prepared.

Cassidy Colbert

I am a 19-year-old lifelong resident of Damascus, Maryland. I am in my 3rd semester as a part-time student at MC. I plan on getting my Associates Degree in the next couple of years and then transferring to the University of Maryland at the Universities at Shady Grove (health permitting).

MC has been my academic home for the past year and I could not be happier. I started off my collegiate experience at Salisbury University in the fall of 2015, but due to my Chronic Lyme Disease, I was forced to drop out. I thought my academic life was over, as I was too ill to handle a full course-load, but that is when I discovered the part-time option at MC. MC gave the choice to take as many, or as few classes as I wanted, and because of this, I am now back on track to getting my degree. MC also offered me disability support services to further assist me in accomplishing my dreams.

I hope that this blog can help other students like me to see that even though they may not be taking the “traditional” route towards higher education, MC offers load of opportunities that will get us where we want to go. Whether you aren’t sure where you want to end up in life, or have another obstacle, like a chronic illness or disability, you can still reach for the stars and accomplish anything they want to here at MC.

  1. Great tips Cassidy and a frequent review is always warranted since in a panic, we often forget the first (and maybe the most important) thing to do! It’s also good to be familiar with where the emergency stations are.

  2. Cassidy, this is such a great blog to post. I have been receiving many emails about emergencies about Montgomery College (which isn’t good at all). This post is a great reminder for students to act and be aware of their surroundings. I liked that you mentioned directions on what to do during a lockdown. Super informational and super important! Great job!

    1. Thank you! It has been pretty scary with all the crime on campus lately so I just hope these tips are helpful!
