Hidden Gem of MC

I have discovered the hidden gem of MC—the Theatre Program. Before you ask, no I am not part of the Theatre Program (you do not want to see me perform), but I am obsessed with everything about it.

A friend of mine is a theatre major and has introduced me to the wonderful world of theatre at Montgomery College. Every day we hang out in the Theatre Arts Building in between classes. The first time I went there I thought it was a dark, dingy building, but I soon discovered I was very wrong.

The Theatre Arts Building has a lot to offer. First, the costume shop is located here. This is a place where students and faculty can go and relax, eat lunch, chit chat—oh and it’s where the costumes are made for the shows!

There is also a super cozy seating area right outside the costume shop, called the “Cabbage Patch,” that I love too. The people, however, are my favorite part of the Theatre Arts Building.

Everyone is so, so kind. Even though I am an “outsider” they welcomed me with open arms—and songs. They are like one giant family. When I asked them what they like most about the theater program it was a resounding “everything.” Yet, one key thing they all agreed that made the MC Theatre Program so grand is the professors.

One student said that “the professors treat you like professionals” and another chimed in with, “but they also talk to you like they are your best friend.” I’m a firm believer that great professors can make or break your collegiate experience, and from what I have witnessed, the theatre professors at MC are truly going above and beyond to make a great program—shout to Laura Esti Miller.

The Theatre Program has three upcoming shows. First is MyAmerica at the Rockville campus—October 11, 12, and 13. Then, Good Kids, at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus, showing the last two weekends in October. Finally, The Crucible will be showing from November 6 through November 10 on the Rockville campus.

Come out and support this amazing program and these wonderful people who have made my semester a success already.

Break a leg, MC Theatre Program students!

 

I am a 19-year-old lifelong resident of Damascus, Maryland. I am in my 3rd semester as a part-time student at MC. I plan on getting my Associates Degree in the next couple of years and then transferring to the University of Maryland at the Universities at Shady Grove (health permitting).

MC has been my academic home for the past year and I could not be happier. I started off my collegiate experience at Salisbury University in the fall of 2015, but due to my Chronic Lyme Disease, I was forced to drop out. I thought my academic life was over, as I was too ill to handle a full course-load, but that is when I discovered the part-time option at MC. MC gave the choice to take as many, or as few classes as I wanted, and because of this, I am now back on track to getting my degree. MC also offered me disability support services to further assist me in accomplishing my dreams.

I hope that this blog can help other students like me to see that even though they may not be taking the “traditional” route towards higher education, MC offers load of opportunities that will get us where we want to go. Whether you aren’t sure where you want to end up in life, or have another obstacle, like a chronic illness or disability, you can still reach for the stars and accomplish anything they want to here at MC.
