The Global Engagement Requirement for Arts & Humanities Majors:  Students may satisfy the Global Engagement Requirement in one of the following three ways, all of which require the study of a foreign language either before or after transfer to UMD:

Option 1: Study of a Foreign Language Requirement:
 Students will take foreign language coursework to the designated level at UMD or may transfer an equivalent course. Please visit or consult an ARHU advisor at 301.405.2108 for information each language sequence – at community colleges, this is study of a language through the Intermediate II (202 or 203) level.

Option 2: Cultural Immersion through Study Abroad Requirement: Students will participate in a semester long Study Abroad experience through UMD in a country where English is not the primary language. 

Option 3: Individually-designed Engagement Experience Requirement:
 Students may also create an individually-designed experience that achieves the learning outcomes of the global engagement requirement.

Native/Heritage Proficiency Exemption to the Global Engagement Requirement: Students with native/heritage proficiency in one of the languages listed at this link should follow directions:
