Montgomery College will have state-of-the-art math and science classrooms and laboratories on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus with the planned Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building.
This modernization, on the brink of realization after 15 years of planning, will create instructional spaces to prepare students for careers in competitive, in-demand fields that fuel the economic vitality of the County. This green building will create an environment that provides access to the future for our students and the County.
In March 2018, the Board of Trustees approved a contract for the Washington, DC-based integrated design firm, SmithGroup, to design the math and science building on the College’s Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.
Under SmithGroup’s guidance, the College will host a charrette process—an intensive planning activity where neighbors, community members, students, and other stakeholders collaborate with the designers on a vision for design of the building. This process will seek to balance the needs of students, neighbors, the community, and fiscal prudence.
Demolition and construction of the new math and science building started in November 2019. The facility is expected to be fully operational and open for classes in the fall semester of 2022.
