nemy of the People is set in a town with a huge bathing facility that’s crucial to the town’s economy. Dr. Stockmann, resident physician in charge, has discovered that the baths’ drainage system is seriously contaminated. After receiving definite proof, he immediately reports the information to community leaders, but is shocked when it’s rejected. The town leaders undermine Dr. Stockmann’s quest to get the information out to the townspeople. Stockmann is soon viewed as a dangerous quack. The press will not report his findings, the officials refuse to give him a hearing, he loses his position, and the townspeople boycott him. Every weapon of blackmail, slander, and eviction are brought against his family. The doctor realizes that honesty and idealism doesn’t exist in the face of selfish “practical” interests, but he is determined to defy authority and stand for what he believes in.
Enemy of the People contains mature themes and/or language that some patrons may find objectionable.
