Julia Alvarez spoke at the National Book Festival on Saturday, October 26th, and the fiction tent was standing room only. What a powerful speaker! She spoke at length about finding yourself represented in literature, and she praised public libraries (having come from a country that limited what people could read). She is funny and familiar, and very tiny. I am looking forward to seeing her at the F. Scott Fitzgeral Literary Conference in October.
