Call for Submissions: Addressing the Impact of the Costs of College

Montgomery College recognizes that the costs of college impact our students our students’ success well beyond the classroom. Food insecurity and homelessness impact our students’ ability to succeed in the classroom on an immediate basis by impacting learning, attendance, and access to learning materials, and in the longer term, impact retention and completion.

During the Fall 2017 Professional Week, Dr. Sara Goldrick- Rab, author of “Paying the Price” shared her research into the impact of the costs of college on students at the ELITE Professional day. Her findings show that over 50% of college students face some level of food insecurity. (For more information see “House and Home” with links to Dr. Goldrick-Rab’s study or this video of a small group session with Dr. Goldrick-Rab and Montgomery College faculty and staff). This is not the beginning of Montgomery College’s efforts to support students, but this is an opportunity to focus on and learn from each other about the creative and innovative ways we are helping our students.
